April 29. 2009 Swine Flu Alert: Health officials around the world are concerned about the current swine flu outbreak. Please Observe the following:
- Keep tabs on respiratory symptoms. If you or someone in your family develops symptoms suggesting a cold or the flu, be alert for persistent or worsening symptoms, particularly a high fever.
- Stay home if you're sick. If you do have swine flu, you can give it to others starting about 24 hours before you develop symptoms and ending about seven days later.
- Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. Flu viruses can survive for two hours or longer on surfaces, such as doorknobs and countertops.
- Take extra precautionary measures if you visit or live in an affected area. Travel to Mexico has not been restricted, but some airlines are waiving fees for changing your travel plans.
- If you have a chronic condition, such as asthma or heart disease, it's a good idea to wear a breathing mask when you're out in public in affected areas.
- Be prepared. Ask your health care provider or county health department about infection-control plans in case of a serious swine flu outbreak. The antiviral drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) reduce the severity of symptoms.

Spanish Cadet Trip to Nassau
By Denton Gay
On Thursday, April 17th 2008, The four Spanish Cadets went to Nassau for the Foreign Language Cadet Program Poster Competition. We left at around 7:00 am that morning. When we arrived in Nassau, we took a taxi and headed to the Breezes hotel. Arriving at the hotel, we immediately checked in and went to our rooms. During this trip, Mrs. Dushinka Roberts and Mrs. Jessica Hildago-Brown accompanied us. Throughout that day, we participated in activities such as rock climbing, pool, basketball, ring toss volleyball and much more.
At 6:00 pm, we dressed in our school uniforms and headed to the Wyndham Hotel for the Poster Competition. This event featured many students enrolled in the French and Spanish program. For every performer there was a translator to translate in French and one in Spanish. The event started with a prayer, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Catherine Martin and Shoga Newbold who are both Abaco Cadets sang the national anthem while I played on the alto Saxophone. There were a lot of performances and door prizes. I also touched the audience when I played the Wind beneath My Wings on the sax. Coming to the end of this event the four Abaco Cadets were placed in groups of two, dressed in their foreign countries clothes and spoke about their country in Spanish. The crowd was amazed at their ability to speak Spanish very well without reading of a piece of paper. When the winners were announced, I was very excited to hear them call my name for first place in the Spanish category, I knew that all of my hard work had paid off. I received a trophy and a $300.00 cash prize. Second place went to Loudline Joseph a student from st.Francis de Sales. First and second were also given to two other French Cadets from Nassau. Abaco took first and second last year and this year we won it again. The next day we went back to Abaco and to our separate schools and I was proud to know that I represented my school, Wesley College very well.
